I sat in the living room and heard the distinct tone of several digital beeps.

This wouldn't be much of an issue in this day-and-age, but there was nothing of the sort around that could make those specific tones.

And it was a stale form of alarm.  It seemed to come from a different place, a different time.

Instantly my mind thought that it came from the future, and some sort of hunter-robot that sought out its prey in a path of extermination, hunting humans like rodents.  That sound was a cause for great alarm in the domiciles of the future, as the hunter was prowling around nearby and someone was about to be discovered.  Somewhere sometime, people should flee, scurry away with thumping hearts in their chests, jazzed by surging adrenaline coursing through their veins.

It all leaped in there without any pause or induction on my part.  All of this from some random beeps of indeterminate origin.

Where does this come from?
